Longman Lindsey is part of the project team working with the Studio Museum in Harlem as it replaces its current facility with a 5-story building designed expressly for its program and needs. The new building will expand museum area by more than fifty percent, provide educational programs for all ages, and allow for a vastly increased collection focusing on artists of African descent, and black culture. The additional space will accommodate an expanded schedule of special programs, permanent installations, and temporary exhibits. There will be more space devoted to education and public programs, as well as offer a gathering place for nearby residents and many visitors.

Acoustical challenges include sound separation from busy 125th Street, as the project design includes a gathering space for 100+ people, leading directly from the sidewalk to lower level. The event space opens onto a common volume, onto which multiple levels of vertical galleries also open. A sense of shared space, while not leading to intrusive sound transmission, is an important design objective. Longman Lindsey created a 3D acoustic model of the main Lecture Hall, allowing the design team and client to virtually experience a variety of events – spoken word, music, school presentations – to help determine the room geometry, and surface finishes.
